More Tasting Notes
Pinot Gris
Thirty Seven, Sonoma, 2017. The name Thirty Seven comes from: "Thirty-seven interlocking circles create the Flower of Life, an ancient representation of the interconnectivity between all living things and the inherent balance of nature." Age has produced a golden straw color on this complex and fuller-styled Pinot Gris. Look for flavors of lemon rind, pineapple, honey, cantaloupe, and Asian pear. Accents include lychee and slate, framed by generous acidity. 90 points, Enthusiast.
Orange Muscat
Bella Grace Vineyards, Amador County, 2021. Bella Grace is named after the winemaker’s grandmothers. The two friends, Bella & Grace, helped to plant the Winery’s 20 acres in the rolling hills of Northern California. This sweet wine is balanced nicely by a refreshing hint of acidity throughout. Flavors include orange marmalade, peach, nectarine and hints of pistachio.
Red Blend
Passimento by Famiglia Pasqua, Italy, 2017. This deliciously bright and aromatic red wine is made partially in the traditional Venetian appassimento style where grapes are dried before fermentation. The wine has intense red berry aromatics - strawberry, raspberry and red cherry. Fresh herbs and spice add some dynamics to the flavor profile. Merlot 40%, Corvina 30%, Croatina 30%
Zinfandel
Vineyard Select by Dashe Cellars, California, 2021. Dashe Cellars has been located in “Urban Wine Country” since 1996. Their current tasting room is in Alameda. Zinfandel is their specialty, and they source from vineyards throughout Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. The winemaking style is a blend of Anne Dashe's classic French training and her husband Michael Dashe’s experience at Ridge Vineyards, Far Niente and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. From such lofty experience, balanced, well-developed wines are to be expected. And their 2021 Vineyard Select doesn’t disappoint. Look for flavors of pomegranate, black cherry, licorice, clove, and cocoa powder.
Toasting Wine
Blanc du Blanc, Bodega Santa Julia, Mendoza, Argentina, Non-vintage. This bubbly comes from one of the best-known organic producers in the Maipú Valley of Mendoza. Bodega Santa Julia is a family run winery, now headed up by Julia Zuccardi. Her family named the winery after her when she was quite young. She has helped grow the winery into a sustainability pioneer. In addition to being organic and converting land for large-scale composting, the winery has fueled economic growth in the Maipú by providing adult education classes on everything from agriculture to sewing. They have also established a kindergarten in the middle of one of their vineyards. In regard to this wine, look for flavors indicative of a well-crafted Sparkling Chardonnay: pear, quince, honey, toasted bread, and candied orange peel.
